Ganguly’s personal information::

Ganguly full name is Sourav Chandidas Ganguly in which in his name, the middle name is his fathers name i.e., Chandidas and his mothers name is Nirupa Ganguly. Ganguly was the youngest son of Nirupa and chandidas ganguly. His father was a secretary of the cricket Association of Bengal and was of riches person in whole city. His family was very big family with 45 relatives in joint family. By the inspiration of his brother, Ganguly stepped into the cricketing field, his brother Snehasish Ganguly would play for Bengal. Although Ganguly was Right Handed Batsman, he was inspired by his brothers technique, in order to use the technique of his brother he started practicing in Left handed. Ganguly joined one of the cricket academy in Bengal and worked hard to make his career bright, though his family was so not supporting him, as they want Ganguly to concentrate on studies not on cricket. An indoor multi-gyan and concrete wicket was built at home for him and his brother, and he would often watch cricket videos especially his hero David Gower. He did his schooling in “St. Xavier’s school”.

Starting from his carrier::

As Ganguly began his career in 1990-91.Actually Ganguly was picked into Indian team in 1990-91 season, but due to his inconsistent performance he was taken out from the team. In his first ODI he just scored only 3 run’s against West Indies in1992.
As we all know “Failure is the stepping stone for success” Ganguly also learnt how to solve his mistakes after being excluded from the team, he rushed into Domestic cricket and scored ton’s of run’s through out that season i.e.,4-5 years. That season was unforgettable for his life, and also bounced back into in national side against tour of England in 1996.

He was selected for only one ODI and again omitted from Test cricket as there was no place in Test squad, but luck was so good that due to the controversies between his teammates Navjot Singh Siddu and captain Mohammad Azharuddin, siddu left the touring party, and so Ganguly was included alongside Rahul Dravid. On his Test Debut Ganguly made century and became the only third cricketer to score a century on debut and there on Dada did not see backside and went on scoring run’s for team India.

As Ganguly made his ODI debut in1992 against West Indies, but he could manage to make his maiden ODI century in the year 1997 against Sri Lanka by scoring 113 smashing all over the park. There on Ganguly opened the innings for every ODI match that was played. Ganguly was very keen playing against Pakistan, and at the same season where he was in great touch with bat, SAHARA cup has been started; he performed so brilliantly not only with bat but also with bowl. He made his best bowling figures in that series (16/5).

In the 1999 world cup, he smashed his career best 183 against Sri Lanka at Tauton of 158 balls by smashing 17four’s and 7six’s, and that was the same match where sachin and himself(Ganguly) made second best record partnership(318)…..

After naming him as a captain::

It was year 2000, after the match fixing scandal Sourav Ganguly was named as a captain of Indian team. Under his Captaincy India played brilliantly in the world cup 2003. India reached the world cup Final, where they lost to the Australians in the Final’s.
During his captaincy, he was able to concentrate only his captaincy, but not on his individual performance. He was very much happy that team was performing well under captaincy after the success of 2003 world cup. As his performance was going down and down, the winning margin of team India was also going down and he was dropped from the team in October 2005. Again he went to his domestic cricket and English county cricket, did well there and proved everyone wrong that he his player that should and must play for team India. Ganguly is the only fourth player to score 22centuries behind Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya.

After his comeback in 2006::

Ganguly made his comeback when team India was struggling with opening slot and middle order batting slot against South Africa in One Day Series in South Africa. So he was recalled for the Test squad against South Africa, and performed well in the tour match against Rest of South Africa team by scoring 83 runs. The first Test was started and opening slot and number3 batsman
Went out very cheaply, and then Ganguly came in and stood for very long time in crease and scored crucial 51 runs in low scoring game which helped India to win in South Africa for the first time. As his performance was good in that series and as he is one of the senior members of Indian team he was included in 2007 world cup. There were lots of controversies when he was dropped from his team.

Controversary between Chappel and Ganguly::

When India played against Zimbabwe in the year 2005, Ganguly scored majestic century against Zimbabwe where his form was not so good at that period. He was interviewed by the Harsha Bhogle in the later evening session after day’s match was completed talking about his century .He was interviewed many questions asking about his shots and his return form then Harsha Bhogle asked that “Some has told you to step down from captaincy” is it right? Then Ganguly answered “ya it is true” and told it is part of a game, but that issue was stopped there later in the early 206, Greg Chappel who was coach of Indian team emailed to BCCI stating that Ganguly was unfit to lead team India. This email was leaked through out media and country and created history in home town of Ganguly. However 10 months later he was again picked into Indian team.

Ganguly in Indian premier League(IPL)

Ganguly named as captain of Kolkata Knight Riders team which was owned by Shah Rukh Khan, though he was not a specialist of 20-20 format he has ton’s of experience of captaincy in his bags, so he has given to led Kolkata Knight Riders team. He could able to score only 10 runs in his opening match against Bangalore Royal Challengers, but team got victory in a long margin of 148 runs in which Mccullam’s great knock of 158 not out including 10fours and 13six’s helped them to a victory. They won first 2 matches quite handsomely but, they started losing the matches when team lost the crucial players like Mccullam and ponting…. His team was on the top of the table for few days, when they were performing well it was everything good and fine but started losing there after when they lost their players, however they managed to win 4 more matches in the next 12 matches in which one was no result. His team in the race of semi finals when they won 6 of 12 matches, but on the other side teams like Mumbai Indians and Delhi Dare Devils were cruising, so they out of IPL tournament and other four different teams were qualified for the semi finals.

history if indian cricket

Cricket is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports in India and the game is being played all over the country, since its inception. The exact day, month or year of Cricket`s inception in India is still shrouded in mystery, as nobody knows about it. However, according to some people, the Indians started playing the game for the first time in an organized way in the year 1848. The first Indian Cricket club named the Parsee Oriental Cricket Club was founded in that year and they played their first match in Bombay (Mumbai). Thus Cricket started its journey in India. Hence, the history of Indian Cricket can be identified as quite an old one.

However, according to some other, the history of Indian Cricket started its journey in the place named Sylhet (located in today`s Bangladesh). A clear evident has been found to prove this and it is a match report published in the Sporting Intelligence magazine, on 3rd March, 1845. The report was published by the editor of the Englishman newspaper and the news item was titled as "Sepoy Cricketers". The reporter actually gave a wonderful commentary of a match played between the European cricketers and the Sepoy cricketers. Apart from this news item, another report has been found to support the fact that Cricket was first played in Sylhet in India. This report was titled as "Sepoy Cricket at Sylhet" and in this report, the reporter wrote about the match between two regimental sides, each of which contained at least eight native cricketers. The reporter also termed the match to probably be the best contested encounter of that particular season. He also declared that "as usual the bowling of Sepoy Soophul was first rate...".

After its inception, Cricket started to get popularity among the Indian people within a short period of time. The middle and last half of the nineteenth century was an important period in the history of Indian Cricket, as the game spread its reach in almost all the parts of India during that period. Many teams from England started touring India by the close of the nineteenth century. There is a report published in the newspaper, `The Times of India` that supports this fact and the report was about the Presidency matches between the Parsees and the Lord Hawke`s Englishmen. The match was held in Bombay in 1892. The report described how the international Cricket matches that took place in Bombay at that time, increased interest among the local people. In the Metro cities of India like Calcutta (Kolkata), Bombay (Mumbai) and Madras (Chennai), Cricket was started to be played by the first half of the twentieth century. As the Hindus of India too started playing the game, the tournament of Bombay Presidency Matches became the Bombay Triangular in 1907-08. In 1912-13, the entry of the Muslims made it a quadrangular.

Though India did not have a national cricket team during the early 1900s, a few Indian great cricketers of that era did represent the England cricket team. Ranjitsinhji and Duleepsinghji were the prominent ones among them. However, the first international exposure in the history of Indian Cricket came in the year 1926. In that year, a team from the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), led by A.E.R Gilligan toured India. Though it was an unofficial tour, the Indian people were quite interested and enthusiastic about the matches that MCC played during the tour. The legendary Indian cricket player, C. K. Nayudu played brilliantly during that tour and he also scored a century against the MCC side in Bombay. The tour was responsible to redefine the contours of Indian cricket. It ultimately spearheaded to the formation of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the year 1928. India was accredited Test status by 1932, much before it got its Independence in 1947. India played against England in that year.

After Independence, a big push came in the history of Indian Cricket, when India got its first ever Test series win against the neighbouring Asian counterpart and archrivals Pakistan, in 1952. The series saw brilliant and extraordinary performances from some of the greatest Indian Cricket players like Polly Umrigar, Vijay Manjrekar and leg spinner SM Gupte. The Indian Cricket during 1960s saw the Indian team becoming a formidable side on home soil. It was also the decade, when the Indian team started playing well in overseas. India`s great performances on home soil were evident from the fact that India defeated New Zealand and held the teams like Pakistan, England and Australia to a draw, during that period. The 1960s also saw the rising of some of the greatly talented Indian Cricket players like Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Dilip Sardesai, Hanumant Singh, Chandu Borde and not least of all, off-spinner EAS Prasanna.

The era of India`s spin quartet comprising Bishen Singh Bedi (left-arm spinner), Erapalli Prasanna (off-spinner), BS Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan (off-spinner) during 1970s, is considered as the golden era in the history of Indian Cricket. Apart from the dominance of the spin quartet over all the batsmen of the world, 1970s also saw the rising of two of India`s greatest ever batsmen - Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Vishwanath. All of these great Indian Cricket players made their presence felt in the international circuit and contributed immensely in the success of Indian team. India successfully won consecutive Test series in West Indies and England in 1971 and the team was led by Ajit Wadekar, in both the series.

The decade of 1980s in the history of Indian Cricket, saw the Indian team getting significant success in the shorter version of the game, One-Day Internationals (ODIs). India won the World Cup for the first time in 1983, and it was also the only time that India has so far become the world champions. The Indian Cricket saw the rising of some more great cricketers like Kapil Dev, Mahinder Amarnath, Madan Lal, etc, during the 1980s, as well. The entire decade of 1990s in the history of Indian Cricket was dominated by only one cricketer, named Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin is still continuing his service to the Indian Cricket and is considered to be one of the greatest cricketers in the History of Cricket. With the help of Sachin, and some other great cricketers like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, the Indian team successfully won several Cricket Trophies in and outside India.

The new millennium brought a new era in the history of Indian Cricket, as the Indian cricket team has shown some wonderful performances during this period. India has so far won the ODI trophies like Natwest, The Champions` Trophy, the Mini World Cup, etc. The team also beat the Cricketing superpowers like Australia, South Africa, England, West Indies, Pakistan, etc. in various Test series. In the new century, the Indian cricket has found a great captain in Sourav Ganguly, who took the team to the Final of the World Cup, 2003 and also led the team in getting some other great successes. The team is currently being led by the young and enthusiastic MS Dhoni in both the ODIs and in Tests. Dhoni led India in winning the ODI series in Australia distinctively, and he also led the team in noticeable performances in the recently concluded Kit Ply Cup in Bangladesh and in the Asia Cup. With Ganguly and Kumble already retired from the international cricket, and Tendulkar and Dravid approaching to the finishing stages of their illustrious careers, the future of Indian cricket now lies in the hands of the younger but experienced players. Some of the most notable Indian Cricket players of this time include Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh along with the rookies like S Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, Gautam Gambhir, Yousuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwari, Manpreet Goni, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Piyush Chawla, apart from the very much enthusiastic captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

  •  International Cricket

Cricket was first played by Mohd Azhar Mansoor.He is the son of the great cricketer Mansoor P.K.He is from the state of Kerala.He is currently playing for Qatar International Team.International cricket in India generally does not follow a fixed pattern. For example, the English schedule under which the nation tours other countries during winter and plays at home during the summer. Generally, there has recently been a tendency to play more one-day matches than Test matches. Cricket in India is managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the richest cricket board in the cricket world. Indian International Cricketing Squad has also provided some of the greatest players to the world. Indian cricket has a rich history.
  •   Domestic Competitions

  • Ranji Trophy - Founded as 'The Cricket Championship of India' at a meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in July 1934. The first Ranji Trophy fixtures took place in the 1934-35 season. Syed Mohammed Hadi of Hyderabad was the first batsman to score a century in the tournament. The Trophy was donated by H.H. Sir Bhupendra Singh Mahinder Baha-dur, Maharajah of Patiala in memory of His late Highness Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji of Nawanagar. In the main, the Ranji Trophy is composed of teams representing the states that make up India. As the political states have multiplied, so have cricket teams, but not every state has a team. Some states have more than one cricket team, e.g. Maharashtra and Gujarat. There are also 'odd' teams like Railways, and Services representing the armed forces. The various teams used to be grouped into zones - North, West, East, Central and South - and the initial matches were played on a league basis within the zones. The top two (until 1991-92) and then top three teams (subsequent years) from each zone then played in a national knock-out competition. Starting with the 2002-03 season, the zonal system has been abandoned and a two-division structure has been adopted with two teams being promoted from the plate league and two relegated from the elite league. If the knockout matches are not finished they are decided on the first-innings lead.
  • Irani Trophy - The Irani Trophy tournament was conceived during the 1959-60 season to mark the completion of 25 years of the Ranji Trophy championship and was named after the late Z.R. Irani, who was associated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from its inception in 1928, till his death in 1970 and a keen patron of the game. The first match, played between the Ranji Trophy champions and the Rest of India was played in 1959-60. For the first few years, it was played at the fag end of the season. Realising the importance of the fixture, the BCCI moved it to the beginning of the season. Since 1965-66, it has traditionally heralded the start of the new domestic season. The Irani Trophy game ranks very high in popularity and importance. It is one of the few domestic matches that is followed with keen interest by cricket lovers in the country. Leading players take part in the game which has often been a sort of selection trial to pick the Indian team for foreign tours.
  • Vijay Hazare Trophy- named after the prolific Indian batsman, the Vijay Hazare Trophy was started in 2002-03 as an attempt to bring the limited-overs game among a greater audience. The competition involves state teams from the Ranji trophy plates battling out in a 50-over competition, much on the lines of Ford Ranger Cup of Australia and Friends Provident Trophy of England. Since its conception, Tamil Nadu and Mumbai have won the trophy twice each. It is also dubbed as the Premier Cup by BCCI. It now joins Deodhar Trophy as the second one-day competition of Indian domestic circuit.
  • Duleep Trophy - The Duleep Trophy competition, a first-class competition, was started by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 1961-62 with the aim of providing a greater competitive edge in domestic cricket - because, apart from the knock-out stages of the Ranji Trophy, that competition proved predictable, with Bombay winning for fifteen consecutive years. The Duleep was also meant to help the selectors in assessing form. The original format was that five teams, drawn from the five zones, play each other on a knock-out basis. From the 1993-94 season, the competition has been converted to a league format.
  • Deodhar Trophy - Started in 1973-74 by Board of Control for Cricket in India, it is the current one-day cricket competition in Indian domestic cricket. 5 zonal teams - North zone, South zone, East zone, West zone and Central zone feature in the competition. North zone have won this competition 11th time. It is also called All-Star Series due to some big names representing their Zonal sides in the one-day fixtures.
  • Challenger series - Started as the Challenger series by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 1994-95 and later named as NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in 1998-99, the tournament features 3 teams: India senior, India A and India B playing each other. They were later renamed India Blue, India Red and India Green respectively. This competition also marked as the platform of return for some big names like Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly in 2005-06 season after they battled injury and form respectively. The tournament features the top 36 players from across India and is also the most popular domestic structure after IPL.
  • Inter-State T20 Championship - After India became another member of the ICC Twenty20 and played its first international T20 against South Africa, BCCI launched its own state structure in 2006-07 season, with 27 Ranji teams divided in 5 Zones. The final was played between Punjab and Tamil Nadu, which the latter won by 2 wickets and 2 balls remaining, thereby becoming the only ever winner of this series. In this series, Rohit Sharma also became the only ever Indian to register a T20 century for Mumbai against Gujarat. The competition was later replaced by a franchise-based IPL.
  • Indian Premier League - In response to the rival ICL, the BCCI started the Twenty20 Indian Premier League (known as the IPL). This League has been launched by BCCI have received support from all the other Cricket Boards, and International Players could be drafted into City-based Franchises. The game has been likened to Baseball with crowd participation encouraged more strongly than in other forms of the game.It has been greatly acknowledged by people and has made huge profits.
  • Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy - To be played for the first time in the 2008-09 season, this will be the first of its kind zonal T20 championship and the third overall in the Indian cricket season, which would see Ranji teams divided along zonal lines into two groups with the tournament culminating in the All India T20 final between the winners of the two groups for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Launched after the success of the IPL and the need of the BCCI to search for more talent in the growing regions of cricket.
  • BCCI Corporate Trophy - BCCI have set up a 12 team inter-corporate tournament which will involve all the top Indian cricketers. The tournament will involve 50 over aside matches with the winner picking up Rs 1 Crore and the runner up getting Rs 50 lakh.
